Sky Glass Energy Consumption & Electricity Running Costs (UK)

Applies to: Sky Glass Gen 1 Sky Glass Gen 2 Sky Glass Air
Bar chart comparing wattage and annual electricity running costs for Sky Glass Air, Gen 2, and Sky Stream puck
Power consumption benchmarks across active and standby modes based on UK Ofgem tariff rates. October 2026.

Measured Power Consumption Benchmarks (Watts)

Because Sky Glass contains an integrated 215W 6-speaker audio system, dedicated subwoofers, and a Quantum Dot display with full-array local dimming, its electrical profile differs from basic thin-bezel televisions. Here are our measured power readings taken across 40 hours of mixed testing (broadcast TV, 4K HDR movie streaming, and console gaming):

Device Model Active Viewing (SDR) Active Viewing (4K HDR) Networked Standby Est. Annual Cost (5 hrs/day)
Sky Glass Air 43" 52 W 64 W 0.5 W ~£25.90 / yr
Sky Glass Gen 2 43" 78 W 92 W 1.5 W ~£37.95 / yr
Sky Glass Gen 2 55" 105 W 124 W 1.8 W ~£50.02 / yr
Sky Glass Gen 2 65" 135 W 158 W 2.2 W ~£63.42 / yr
Sky Stream Puck 3.8 W 4.5 W 0.4 W ~£1.79 / yr
Annual estimates calculated at standard Ofgem domestic electricity price cap rate of 24.5p per kWh.

Standby Modes Explained: Enhanced vs Networked Sleep

In Settings > Start up & standby, Sky Glass offers two distinct standby configurations:

Sky Glass vs Sky Stream Energy Comparison

If minimizing energy consumption is your top priority, the Sky Stream puck is exceptionally efficient. Drawing only 3.8 Watts during active 4K streaming, it consumes less power than a single LED lightbulb. However, you must also factor in the wattage of your existing television (typically 60W to 120W) plus any standalone soundbar.

4 Practical Tips to Cut Sky Glass Energy Bills

1

Turn Off the Glance Motion Sensor

Under Settings > Start up & standby > Motion sensor, switch this feature OFF. The motion sensor continuously fires radar pulses into your living room and wakes the display whenever pets or family members walk past.

2

Enable Auto-Standby Timer

Ensure the Auto-standby timer is set to 4 hours. If you fall asleep with the television streaming, Entertainment OS will display an on-screen warning before putting the panel into standby.

3

Activate the Ambient Light Sensor

In Settings > Picture > Auto-brightness, enable the ambient sensor. In dark evening viewing, the TV automatically dims its quantum dot backlight, reducing power draw by up to 25W.

4

Keep Audio in Normal Mode for Daytime Viewing

Bass Boost and high-volume Dolby Atmos processing increase peak audio power amplifier draw. Keep audio presets on Speech / Normal for casual daytime programming.

Should You Turn Off Sky Glass at the Wall Overnight?

Firmware Update Notice

We do NOT recommend switching Sky Glass off at the wall plug every night. Sky pushes Entertainment OS firmware patches, security updates, and Electronic Programme Guide (EPG) playlist indexes between 2:00 AM and 5:00 AM. If the TV is completely unpowered at the wall, boot times the following morning will be delayed by 5–10 minutes while the TV catches up on queued updates, and you risk missing critical bug fix releases.
